Topic: [TUTORIAL] Host your main site on a different server

Many people on this forum don't like YouHosting because their own site is down a lot or shows errors. However, many people don't know how to host your own site on a different hosting account or server and some don't even know it's possible! If you are one of those two groups, this tutorial is for you.

Before we start, you should have a better hosting account or server for your site already, with a control panel you know how to use. I don't know where you want to host your site so I will try to keep the instructions as generic as possible.

Step 1: Find your new website IP
The first thing you need to do is find out the IP of your new host. Most control panels show the website IP on the main page, just like this:
http://imageshack.us/a/img163/2404/screenshotfrom201303202x.png
Almost all control panels tell you a website IP in an Account Details section as well (but it might be called different) and if you can't find it yourself, ask your new hosting provider. Please note that the server IP and website IP might be different. If you're not sure, ask your new hosting provider.

Step 2: Update the A record
Now we will make your domain point to your new server. To do this, login to your web hosting control panel at YouHosting. After you've navigated to your domain, go to the DNS Zone Editor section. Now you need to update the A record for record source @. This is what it could look like.
http://i.imgur.com/ZN8ka2Q.jpg
After you've entered the IP address, click Update and your site will point to the new server within 48 hours.

Step 3: Move your website
Now you need to move your website from your YouHosting account to your new server. I can't give any specific instructions for this, but I recommend to download your website files to your desktop using an application like FileZilla (don't use file managers) and then reupload them to your new host in the same way. If your website has a database, export and import it using phpMyAdmin (rather than a control panel backup tool). Also, don't forget to update the configuration file of your script with the details of the new database.

What this means:
- Your main site (yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com) is hosted on the new server. This means no more CPU limit exceeded errors or account account unavailable messages.

- If you want to connect to the FTP of your new host, use yourdomain.com or the IP of your new host. Due to limitations of YouHosting's DNS Zone Editor, ftp.yourdomain.com still points to your YouHosting account.

- All subdomains of your account still resolve to their old addresses. This means that cpanel.yourdomain.com and client.yourdomain.com still work like nothing happened.

- Email is still hosted by YouHosting or whatever email provider you were using before. We don't change MX records in this tutorial so nothing changes for your email.

- Your nameservers are still pointed to YouHosting. Any other changes to DNS records you need to make are done at YouHosting

This is very nice.Thanks...

Re: [TUTORIAL] Host your main site on a different server

It's good to put this here. I nearly left youhosting due to the ip connection limit thinny, which was so frustrating.

This idea helped me merged my youhosting reseller to my other business. It's fantastic. thnx

Re: [TUTORIAL] Host your main site on a different server

@Hans, it seems that you are using your direct admin reseller to host your site.

Did you face any downtime or any other error there ?

Re: [TUTORIAL] Host your main site on a different server

I don't use the DirectAdmin host for my own site. I have bought a cheap dedicated server from OVH (the cheapest server on this page) and I LOVE IT (I'm hosting all my own sites on it). But since the budget for many people on this forum is quite limited, I'm giving everyone a free alternative as well. I do add that I have been tracking the uptime of the DirectAdmin server and I'm not disappointed.

Good work Hans!

Don't lie the people that you offer free unlimited hosting because at least one will know that you lied and he will say to more people through forums, blogs, social networks etc. Your reputation will be highly affected.

This is just a suggestion, you decide what to do.

Re: [TUTORIAL] Host your main site on a different server

tutorial is ok but does not solve anything
when yourhosting is down is down api, builder, cpanel, phpmyadmin, webmail, ...

How can you say that? It solves most issues. I've been receiving CPU limit exceed half way though each day for like one week in a row which really affected the signup rate, however after Hans taught me to move to another host, this error was gone. Now i dont have to put up with youhostings restrictions on my main site.

True, it doesnt make a difference to the client control panel when its down, but usually my clients understand that downtimes occur in free hosting environments.

1. An upstream reseller offers me unlimited diskspace and bandwidth. No, I don't trust him either but I got the account, I don't pay anything and it's currently superior to YouHosting.
2. I don't trust this reseller either which is why I don't offer this product publicly. When going to clients.grendelhosting.com, you can't see DirectAdmin hosting in the catalogue. I'm just giving this product to you because some of you might find it useful. That said, YOU (specifically) don't HAVE to use it. If you use your own host: fine, great, no problem! If you don't have any subsitute hosting products: use my offer.

Yes, this tutorial won't change that. But all servers on YouHosting go down once in a while, including whichever server hosts your main site. And what if only that server is down and everything else is up? Then you will lose clients because they can't sign up on your site and new clients will leave because they don't trust you anymore. Again, this doesn't protect your clients, it only protects you.

I'm sure it wouldn't solve anything for "you", since you have no need for it.
I thought like that too the first time I saw that discussion in one of the threads. But wait until you start to get more traffic and the embarrassing "ip limit" starts to show up; that will be when you'll realized it solves everything you'll ever wanted. big_smile

In that case, ignore the first screenshot and get the IP from DirectAdmin -> Site Info. Perhaps I should not have used YouHosting for the first screenshot. I have updated it now with a cPanel screenshot (in case you feel like buying from iHostingBox tongue ).

Read the tutorial. I have fixed all screenshots now, so if you see a YH screenshot you should use YouHosting. Then just do what the tutorial says.

I assume this is about my DirectAdmin hosting? If it is, create a ticket (either from DirectAdmin or BoxBilling). This topic is about the tutorial, not my hosting.

In theory: yes. But I've tried and (rage)quit. When both YH and MOFH use cpanel.yourdomain.com it can become quite tricky to set up. I then proceeded to set it up as two separate companies (recommended) but I've since dropped the VistaPanel project because I couldn't agree with some sections of their ToS.

@Hans

is that TOS about when you get free domain name from SecureSignup ?

Re: [TUTORIAL] Host your main site on a different server

itsright wrote:

Nope. It's this section:

iFastNet ToS Section 19b wrote:

MyOwnFreeHost.net resellers using the free or plan 2 service are required to have paid hosting plan links to ifastnet.com present in a visible location on the reseller domain home page.  Securesignup  reserves the right to suspend and cancel resellers who do not have the paid plan links to ifastnet.com.  Resellers are entitled to use the securesignup affiliate program for paid plan links.

MyOwnFreeHost.net resellers using plan 3 or above may remove the paid plan links and are exempt from the requirement for placing paid plan links.

This requirement does not fit my business plan so I will not use their service. If you don't like it, don't use it right?
